If you’ve recently cracked your back molar, then it’s important to keep your cool and do what you can to improve the situation and receive treatment as soon as possible.

Oftentimes, you can tell if you have broken a molar if you have severe pain or sensitivity in the tooth when using it or when consuming hot, sweet, or acidic foods and drinks. However, sometimes there won’t be pain or sensitivity at all, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it treated. In fact, it is vital to get it treated as soon as possible so additional problems don’t occur.

To help you in this situation, our Johnson Dentistry dental team encourages you to do the following things:

–Avoid using the tooth: It’s best to avoid using the tooth until you’ve had the problem fixed. This is because there is a high chance of worsening the crack if you use it. So, if you absolutely have to eat, try using the opposite side of your mouth. Also, stick to eating soft foods as a precaution.

–Control the bleeding and reduce the swelling: Control the bleeding by applying a piece of gauze pad to the injured area for about 10 minutes or until the bleeding subsides. Reduce the swelling and relieve the pain by icing outside the injured area in 30-minute intervals.

–Visit your dentist: See Dr. John A. Johnson Jr. as soon as possible and don’t forget to bring the broken pieces of the tooth with you when you come into the office if you happen to have any.
