Dr. Johnson on gum disease treatment
It's very important that we all have healthy gums. What we do here in the practice is first assess every patient that comes in as to what their health is currently. Our hygienists are very good about helping with that, they're very knowledgeable. They do a lot of CE courses as well as what I do in learning all the aspects of good health in their oral cavity. So, we do a lot of things with treatment to help get their health back in order for the patients' sake. And again, simplifying it for the patients so they understand it, because a lot of what is missed in dentistry, particularly with gum disease, is the patient understanding what we're doing and what they need to do to maintain it.

Healthy Gums Can Make Your Smile Healthier
Dr. Johnson and our team will do all we can to restore your oral health. One of the main gum treatments we use is “deep cleaning” with scaling and root planing. Using special dental tools, we will first remove (scale) plaque, tartar, and bacteria from around and below your gumline where you can’t reach when brushing and flossing. Then we will smooth (plane) the roots to make it difficult for bacteria to regrow there.
We can also use a local antibiotic if necessary. Arestin eliminates bacteria below your gumline so your gums have a chance to heal. We’ll apply it directly on your gums, so you won’t have to worry about taking any medication.
If your gum disease is more severe, to the point that you’ve lost bone material and you’re at risk for losing teeth, we offer periodontal splinting. This procedure allows us to stabilize teeth that have become loose due to insufficient bone mass. We will bond a splint in place – usually a wire – that reduces stress on the remaining gum tissue and allows you to use the teeth for a while longer.
