Dr. Johnson would tell you that I’m not a fan of coming to the dentist, and they just try to make it as pleasant as possible, as comfortable as possible.
I never have high blood pressure except when I come to the dentist. And so, but in general, this has been the first practice that I’ve been to where that’s not the norm, it’s more of the exception. Which is rare for me because coming to the dentist has always been a thing that I’ve struggled with.
Very kind. He’s just a kind soul. He’s … I’ve seen him, like I said for 10 years. My three children have seen him. You know, and with kids you’ve got varying ages and problems, and they all love him just as much as I do.
It is a family. You know, when we first started coming, his mom, Mary, was the receptionist, and everyone’s really good about knowing names, recognizing you when you call in. My insurance has changed 100 times. I don’t have any right now, and they always make the best accommodations that they can.

I hope you agree I have good smile, because I have good teeth. I’ve been with him probably five years, so over the time, we did everything. I used cosmetic and cavity. Every time I came I said, “Dr. Johnson, I don’t like my smile,” because I’m in front of people all the time. It’s my profession, so I’m very sensitive, my teeth. So he said, “Jia, we can do this and this.” I’m happy with where I am today. It’s a lot of work. It’s five years of work. Little by little, we set the treatment plan. I love the fact he’s very proactive. He’s very patient with me. I think that’s my minimum requirement. Every dentist I had in my life was very short. Not short-tempered, but it just always treat you as a machine. I can feel. They say, “Don’t worry about that. I’m gonna take care of you.” They didn’t have time for me for asking questions.
I feel I had all the time in the world when I’m with Dr. Johnson. He’s so patient. He always say, “Jia, we can do this.” I say, “I’m bothered by this one. I’m very picky. What can we do?” “Okay, let me do some research. Let’s do it.” I think he’s competent and very, very capable. So, he’s very innovative. My whole family comes here. He’s working with everybody one-on-one. I think he’s just, level of research he demonstrates. He’s not just say, “Let’s do this.”
When I first came, I look at a facility, I’m thinking, “Why it’s here? Who knows this facility? It’s so beautiful with all the technology.” I was just very impressed. It’s like a hidden gem. I don’t know how many people know about this place. It’s nice and clean. It’s just he demonstrated that level of knowledge. I can trust him. A lot of times I say, “You tell me what to do. I trust you.” I think that level of trusting relationship means a lot to me.

At my age, obviously, your dental condition declines, but he has been able to revive it. He’s been able to revive it to where I feel comfortable smiling, and I don’t have any problems with my teeth. So, I think he’s done a great job.

Growing up in China, I remember hygienically, everybody at home has very bad teeth. We grew up, you were in pain. You missed school for three days. Always come to the point we have to do root canals, so I have a lot of crowns. My mom, my sister, it was so much pain we all have to endure. We didn’t understand the concept of floss. There’s no cleaning, so for the whole lifetime living China, nobody ever go to the cleaning routine, the hygiene. It’s a different philosophy.
When I came here, I said, “Dr. Johnson, I wanna do something about my teeth.” I’m always ashamed. I didn’t wanna open my mouth. I didn’t want people to see ’cause I take care of me in every kind of way. He taught me how do you take care. What is the first steps is I have my seven-step routine every day, including my threader, so I learned. I’m very regress, so every time I come back, he say, “Jia, you’ve done a great job.” I improved my hygiene over the years because I’ve learned from him what I do. I don’t compromise every day.

I went through some dental procedures earlier on in my life when I lived somewhere else, and so I guess they bonded the teeth together and kind of made teeth, but those had chipped and were looking really bad. The color was wrong and everything, and I just didn’t like to smile. I kept my mouth closed. I’d do the closed-mouth smile, and the minute that I got this brand-new set, it just completely changed everything. Everybody noticed, I looked so much happier, and I just couldn’t keep from showing them off.

Dr. Johnson is the best. I grew up in China where oral hygiene, it’s not exist, right? We don’t care about oral hygiene. When I came to the U.S. 20 years ago, I had really bad teeth. I told myself, “One day if I have a job, I have money, all I’m going to invest is my teeth.” My first job was in Florida. I had a terrible, terrible dentist. Yeah, it was a very bad experience. Finally, I had a bone infection. It was a very painful experience. Then I moved here. I had another terrible dentist, sadly, right? Because I don’t know how to choose when it comes to dental physical, it’s just always overwhelming to me. I found this Dr. Johnson by chance. One of my friends had a practice. He said, “Oh, you can go to Dr. Johnson.” This is the best decision I’ve ever made in my life. Yeah. He’s truly perfectionist.
I’m a perfectionist in my profession. He is perfectionist. I think it’s very important you care about your patient, not just … This is not a business, right? You are changing people’s life. That’s very important. I see that genuine care from him about me, about my family. That’s the first thing I will say. Number two, because I’m professional, competency is very important. A couple of times when I went through the pain, it was worse than giving birth, right? Because my whole face was swollen. I have that trust in Dr. Johnson, because it’s competence and his knowledge. I think that’s very important.
